Deep Cleaning Checklist: What a Real Deep Clean Includes

A room-by-room deep cleaning checklist, how a deep clean differs from regular cleaning, and a spring cleaning plan for Vancouver homes after the rain.

C&M cleaner vacuuming a living room

A deep cleaning checklist covers the parts of a home that a regular clean skips: baseboards, vents, door frames, light fixtures, grout, the inside of appliances and the floor behind and under furniture. Most homes benefit from one a few times a year, and it is the right starting point before a regular cleaning routine begins. Below is a room-by-room list, a plain comparison with regular cleaning, and a spring version for Vancouver homes coming out of the rainy season.

Deep cleaning vs regular cleaning

A regular clean maintains a home. A deep clean resets it.

Regular cleaning Deep cleaning
Purpose Keep a clean home clean Remove built-up dirt and grime
Kitchen Counters, stovetop, appliance exteriors Adds the inside of the oven, fridge and cabinets, and the range hood filter
Bathroom Toilet, sink, tub, mirror, floor Adds grout, caulking, the fan cover and behind the toilet
Detail work Quick dusting of reachable surfaces Baseboards, door frames, vents, light fixtures, switches
Furniture Clean around it Move it and clean behind and under
How often Weekly or every two weeks A few times a year, or before regular cleaning starts

Because it reaches so much more, a deep clean takes considerably longer than a regular visit, which is why cleaning companies usually quote the two separately.

Before you start

  • Declutter first. Clear counters, floors and shelves so you can clean the surfaces themselves.
  • Gather microfibre cloths, all-purpose cleaner, degreaser, a grout brush, an extendable duster, a step stool and a vacuum with attachments.
  • Work one room at a time, top to bottom, dry before wet, floors last.
  • Let products sit for a few minutes on grease and soap scum instead of scrubbing harder. It saves your arms and your surfaces.

Deep cleaning checklist, room by room

Throughout the home

These tasks apply to every room and are the heart of a deep clean:

  • Dust ceiling corners and remove cobwebs
  • Wipe light fixtures and ceiling fans (switch off the power and let bulbs cool first)
  • Vacuum and wipe heating vents, return air grilles and baseboard heaters
  • Wipe door frames, the tops of doors and door handles
  • Wipe light switches and outlet covers
  • Hand-wipe baseboards
  • Clean blinds and vacuum or wash curtains
  • Wipe window sills, then vacuum and scrub the tracks
  • Move furniture and vacuum behind and under it
  • Spot-clean scuffs and marks on walls

Kitchen

  • Clean inside the oven, the racks and the door glass
  • Empty and wash the fridge and freezer, including shelves, drawers and the door gasket
  • Vacuum the grille at the bottom or back of the fridge
  • Degrease the range hood and soak the filter
  • Empty and wipe the inside of cabinets and drawers
  • Degrease cabinet fronts, especially near the stove
  • Clean the dishwasher filter and seal, then run an empty cleaning cycle
  • Descale the kettle and the faucet aerator
  • Empty the toaster crumb tray and clean the microwave
  • Scrub the backsplash grout and clean along the floor edges and under the kickplate

Bathrooms

  • Scrub grout and check caulking for mildew
  • Descale the shower head, faucets and glass doors
  • Clean behind the toilet and around its base
  • Vacuum and wipe the exhaust fan cover
  • Empty and wipe vanity drawers and the medicine cabinet
  • Wash the shower curtain liner and bath mats
  • Wipe tiled walls, not just the tub

Bathrooms have the most specialized problems, from hard water to black mildew in silicone. The bathroom deep cleaning guide goes through each one.

Bedrooms and living areas

  • Vacuum the mattress and the floor under the bed
  • Wash pillows, duvets and mattress protectors according to their care labels
  • Vacuum upholstery and under sofa cushions
  • Dust the tops of wardrobes, bookshelves and frames
  • Wipe closet shelves and rods
  • Vacuum carpets slowly, with overlapping passes

Vacuuming only lifts so much from carpet fibres. The guide on how often to clean carpets explains when a deeper carpet clean makes sense.

Spring cleaning checklist for Vancouver homes

After months of rain, most Metro Vancouver homes need the same kind of attention. Condensation, wet coats and windows kept closed all winter leave moisture in places where it should not sit.

Windows and tracks

  • Wash interior glass
  • Scrub the tracks, where black mildew collects from winter condensation
  • Wipe frames and sills, then dry them
  • Make sure the small drainage holes at the bottom of sliding window and door tracks are clear

Mould-prone spots

  • Bathroom caulking and the ceiling above the shower
  • Inside closets on exterior walls
  • Behind furniture pushed against outside walls
  • Under the kitchen and bathroom sinks
  • Around windows in basement suites

Small patches of surface mildew can usually be cleaned and dried. If it comes back quickly or covers a large area, it may point to a moisture problem worth raising with your landlord, strata or a contractor.

Entryway

  • Wash or replace the door mat
  • Clean the boot tray and the floor beneath it
  • Wipe splash marks off the lower walls and the front door
  • Air out the front closet and move heavy winter gear into storage

Balcony or patio

  • Sweep, then wipe the railings and glass
  • Clear leaves from the balcony drain
  • Check your strata rules before using a pressure washer or letting water run off the edge

A note on dust and allergies

If anyone in your home deals with allergies, a few habits help keep dust down between deep cleans:

  • Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, so fine dust is captured instead of blown back into the room
  • Dust with a damp microfibre cloth rather than a feather duster
  • Wash bedding regularly, at the warmest temperature the care label allows
  • Vacuum upholstery and curtains, which hold onto dust
  • Replace furnace and air purifier filters on the schedule the manufacturer recommends
  • Run bathroom fans to keep humidity in check

These are good cleaning habits, not medical advice. For health concerns, talk to your doctor.

FAQ

What is included in a deep clean?

A deep clean covers everything in a regular clean plus the detail work: baseboards, door frames, vents, light fixtures, switches, grout, and the inside of the oven, fridge and cabinets. It usually includes cleaning behind and under furniture that can be moved safely. Scope varies between companies, so ask for a written list before booking.

How often should you deep clean your house?

Many households deep clean a few times a year, often in spring and before the holidays. Homes with pets, heavy cooking or allergies may need it more often. A regular house cleaning checklist in between keeps each deep clean manageable.

Should I get a deep clean before starting regular cleaning?

Usually, yes. A deep clean removes the build-up first, so regular visits can focus on keeping things at that level. Without it, the first few regular cleans tend to spend their time catching up instead of maintaining.
